It's October, which means there's plenty filling up the social calendar this month. Let's hope the rain goes away for that brief, rewarding moment known as happy hour...

And, speaking of happy hour, aren't we glad we're here in Chawwleston, where the "happy" hour begins at 4p.m. (as opposed to 5p.m.) and typically draws to a close around 8p.m. (rather than 7p.m.). In the Holy City, we do business over cocktails at sunset. That's just way life is here in this 300-year old port city.

First up - go straight from work (and maybe let work pay for it) - Red's Icehouse at Shem Creek. Shrimp boats, October sunset, dolphins, cold beer...all good things and all reason to join the Charleston Metro Chamber's Business After Hours from 5:30 - 7p.m. Membership not required.
Next hit - Upper King Street for Design Walk, Fall Style. From 5-8p.m., stroll up and down this gem of the peninsula...that upper part of the royal straight road of shopping that is second to none (in my opinion) in the Southeast. Visit shops like Blue Bicycle Books, Sig Supply, Mac & Murphy...just park, start walking and keep sipping. Won't disappoint, I promise.
Neander away from all the fabulous foot traffic on King Street and over one block (via John Street) to the Charleston Museum for the opening reception to introduce their newest installation. Aisle Style: 150 Years of Wedding Fashion, is an original exhibition on display from October 16, 2009 through June 30, 2010. This little celebratory soiree will feature favorite local wedding vendors, such as Social Design Event & Planning, Tiger Lily Florist and Ashley Bakery. Make an appearance before 8p.m. and rub elbows will the eventsters of this white satin-laced destination city.

There's really no excuse to stay in this Thursday...plenty of opportunity to mix and mingle...no matter what your "agenda".

A Taste...in black & white...

This weekend's field trip took us east of the Cooper...
We wanted to find a good time, good wine, good food...

Found: 29th Annual Taste of Charleston...Boone Hall Plantation.

It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday...the wine and beer were plentiful (although water was hard to find)...For less than a Jackson we scored a wristband (that allowed us into the village o' lowcountry observance), a few refreshing sips, and a sampling of what local chefs are offering...

The lines weren't long (not even to the "ladies room")...even the entry process was quite easy...
...Voila...a well-oiled machine and something every self-respecting Charleston resident should experience in their tenure here...

There were chefs a' plenty and you could take your pick from the "plastic fork" to the "silver spoon with charger" variety...all packed together in a field under the blazing Southern sun...we had no judgments either way and just started "tasting"
Middleton Place was a favorite...moist shrimp over the last-of-summer succotash...
Maverick Southern Kitchens hit a soft spot, too...
Like I said, the place was swarming with epicurean opportunities...we just had to shove this map in our back pocket and move....
Ice Age made an appearance and, given the broiled-to-a-nice-bubbling-mess weather conditions, this was one of the coolest sights of the afternoon (pun intended)...All in all, good day...good time. Charleston lives on...

Rivalry revelers, here here! Forget the pigskin and turn to tailgating for the best competition in Southern football. The season is finally here and, although I can't stop giggling about Bama's impending National Championship title, I'm way more interested in what's being seen just outside the stadium.

September 5, 2009: First Saturday of college football season, 2009. Mother Nature couldn't have framed it any better: sunny October-esque skies, a woodsy chill in the air, lots of warm colors (crimson reds, orange hues, dashes of black and gold) stampeding into each other. It's such a welcomed and blessed time of year. And it's a damn good excuse to throw a fabulous party.

It's Cinco de Mayo, ya'll...most of us have no concept as to what this day celebrates, rather we find it a good reason to drink margaritas and it seems to be an opening to the summer season of festive parties and outdoor fun.

and back before I fussed with the radio tuner in frustration over Charleston's lack of quality radio stations,

I used to enjoy my mornings with David Dye and his World Cafe goodness on NPR.

That was then.

Those were my college days.
I thought the bond would never end, that World Cafe would follow me to whatever island I so choseto dwell.

World Cafe was (and still is) a mixture of interviews and in-studio performances by all the artists you know are important and have more to say in song
than most of us utter in an entire lifetime.

Now, when I make reference to those glorious broadcasts in conversation,

I'm responded to with a look of bewilderment.

How many of you there are who have never been acquainted...'tis a pity!!

It's time you find the resource in which to

indulge your listening sense of style and adventure,

but you won't find it shuffling through lowcountry fm.

Browsing for new decor inspiration

(suspended, lighting or kissing ball-esque ideas, to be exact),

I stumbled across this image that has absolutely nothing to do with uplighting, kissing, floral decor, or my April event at Boone Hall Cotton Dock, but I find it to be ever-so interesting and fabulous.

More years ago than I wish to count,

Isaac Newton and David Gregory

took part in a merry debate on the campus of Cambridge University.

They were arguing about the "kissing problem", a term signifying two balls making contact in the game of billiards.

Now, I cannot tell you what details the argument entailed, nor can I offer any information about the following image, but I can tell you that the composition itself is fun, fabulous, and just perfect for a little LK experimentation.

I'm no scientist, but I know striking design when I see it.

If you keep up with the who's who and goings on in the design world,

you've probably heard of

Dining by Design,

a 10-year philanthropic hit

sponsored by the partnership of Diffa,

the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS,

and Elle Decor magazine

(one of my favorite publications).

The annual event travels from metropolis to metropolis,

and all the heavy hitters get involved...

big-name designers and companies are asked to "design" a table...

guests shell out the $$ for tickets to attend and personally dine at these stunning tabletops.

THIS JUST IN:

Elle Decor will discontinue its partnership with the event. David Sheppard, Diffa executive director, says the organization is greatful for the mag's contributions, but "to achieve the event’s full potential and provide greater benefits to participating designers and sponsors requires a multimedia partnership with the resources necessary for growth."

I'm sad to see the partnership end,

but will be eager to see what's in store for next year's eight city tour...

For those that know me, it's no secret that Five Loaves has been the LK comfort zone since my first visit to Charleston more than 3 years ago. When I moved here in 2005, I was lucky enough to score an apartment on Canon & St. Philip, only a block away from the quaint & irresistably charming Canon & Coming locale. Every Friday night, I would walk the short journey with my new design magazine in tow, ready for half-price wine, lots of merry chatter from surrounding strangers, and the best food in the city.

Today my friend Erin and I met for a quick bite at the Mt. P location ... "quick" suddenly turned into "all afternoon" as we treated our famished taste buds to the soup trio and salad. With the warm environment, local artistry covering the walls, and a menu full of healthy, nourishing dishes, it's easy to get lost in conversation with a dear friend. The experience was nothing short of sweet bliss.

Casey Glowacki, my Mr. Cool of all local restauranteers, pops up in all parts of this culinary-rich piece of the world...you can have the delish gnocchi (my staple addiction) at any of his three locations: Downtown (corner of Canon & Coming), Crickentree Village (just off Johnnie Dodds/Hwy 17), and at the heart of urbanlicious downtown (corner of Calhoun and King in Millenium Music). Casey's even made my heart go super-flutter with his most recent yummy, Sesame Burgers (Park Circle, North Charleston). I feel somewhat close to this man...I have become a raving fanatic about his unubtrusive, always fresh approach to food. Every person that visits me in Charleston is treated to an evening at Five Loaves. It's one of my most beloved places to dine and entertain.

Parker-Sims shows off their new space at 10 Storehouse Row

Last night all the fab and design-hip gathered at Noisette's 10 Storehouse Row for the launch of Parker-Sims Interiors.

Adrian Sims and Ivie Parker have partnered up to bring a "fresh perspective" to the Charleston design market...they serve individual homeowners, as well as contractors and developers, realtors, etc.

Not only are they paving the way with their oh-so-chic office space located within 10 Storehouse Row, but they are also two fabulous female Charleston Young Professionals.

Kudos to you, ladies!!!

It's a dark, rainy morning and food is on my mind...Autumn being absolutely my favorite season for dining, with its nutty squashes, tart pears, and holiday feasts.

To see what the avant-garde kids are serving up on the culinary playground this season, I started with a visit to Tentation Potel & Chabot's seasonal menus and innovative fall flavors, including Granny Smith-Bartlett Mousse, Frozen Tomato and Avacado Gazpacho Lollipops, Foie Gras Fingers of Foie Gras and Currants....let me stop now, before i weep with finger-lickin' joy.

All the heavy-hitters are out and about this Fall with their captivating new take on culinary art: my two personal favorites are Miami-based

Barton G and Metro DC's Design Cuisine.

Now, I wouldn't recommend taking off on a national party tour so quickly...all your culinary dreams are just beyond your SC294-doorstep!

FOR THOSE OF YOU IN CHARLES TOWNE, do not fret.

There are a number of local caterers who are following these decadent culinary trends...a few are even making up their own path as they go along!

Stephen Duvall Catering & Events has been THE leader in the local biz longer than most and won't be stepping down anytime soon. Chef Charlie Giardano and his culinary team are pleasing the palates at the elite/high-profile gigs, even regional clients in Charlotte, Beaufort, Wilmington, etc. Now with an extensive design and production team in full-force led by Jacqueline Lawrence and Robin Farmer, SDCE is gracefully placing itself above and beyond...(look for an exciting re-launch this Spring!)

Another local player to watch, Iverson Catering, just took over the old Cru Caterin g locale on East Bay. Charleston-native Chef Iverson Brownell's approach is modern, innovative, and freestyle presentation.

Cru is another local yumbuzz (and Charleston's favorite for the past six years), with its unpretentious style and approach to delicious party fare...if you've never checked out Chef John Zucker's quaint restaurant tucked behind the carriage companies downtown and ordered yourself the glorious mac n' cheese, well, you're not living life to its fullest, dear.

And, if you're not headed out to any star-studded galas this weekend, perhaps your tastebuds will be inspired to check out one of these fabulously low-key, local-fav., always-delish, completely affordable Charleston eateries...neander off the beaten path, if you will....happy dining!
